Slept well and got up feeling ready for yet another country. We got to the border at about midday and through with no problems. The road was good. The road deteriorates on the Malawi side but still not really horrendous. It’s an old tar road with less tar than dirt. Then the tar bits are full of potholes. I prefer the dirt actually.
We arrived in Korongo and changed some money. It was the first time we had to tour behind other tourists en masse. Two overland trucks had pulled up. The same two we had met in Dar-Es-Salaam. Then off to get diesel and a big blow – no fuel. The next garage was 220km away and we had a quarter of a tank. It was a bit risky to just go so we went to find one of the truck drivers – Tony. He knew of no closer petrol station either but in the end he gave us 10litres. Nice guy.
We drove down to Chitimba beach resort for the night. This used to be called Des’ place but is now run by a German woman called Giza and two of her friends. There was already a truck there and Tony’s two trucks also arrived (though much later) so with us, 3 other Landrovers and the trucks there must have been 60 people there.
Had stir fry tonight which was good, then bought a beer for Tony and
a gin for Karen (his partner) to settle the debt and off to bed.
